Sterlite Copper Trophy Cricket Tournament


‘Sterlite Copper Trophy’, a district level cricket tournament was organised in association with Thoothukudi District Cricket Association (TDCA) in which 12 colleges of Tuticorin participated. The tournament was conducted in 20-20 format on a knock-out basis.

Mr.VinodWagh, General Manager, Engineering Services inaugurated the event at Port Ground in September. VOC College beat Adithanar College of Arts and Science by 54 runs in the final to win the Sterlite Copper trophy.

Mr.Satyapriya, Manager, Legal, Sterlite Copper presented the trophy to VOC College. Mr.Sivakumaran, Secretary and Mr.Ganesh Kumar, Assistant Secretary, TDCA were present during the event.

Sterlite bags National Award for Excellence in Energy Management 2011


Sterlite has bagged prestigious Energy Efficient Unitawardat the 12th National Award for Excellence in Energy Management 2011 organised by CII – Godrej Green Business Centre held at HICC, Hyderabad.

Mr. Vishal Chawla,  Mr.BabulalDhaked&Mr. M. Karthiof Sterlite received the award from Dr. Ajay Mathur, Director-General, Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), India. The award is in recognition of the company’s excellence in energy management. Sterlite has been winning the award continuously for the last three years.

This has been achieved under guidance of Sterlite Management team Mr. Sameer Gupta, Mr.Anil Tripathi andMr.WaheedRehman.

Business excellence team Mr K Sridhar, Mrs MeenakshiSabharwal and Mr D. N.Nikam also contributed in the whole award process.

Sterlite Copper sponsors Rs 3.1 lakh to purchase medical equipments


Sterlite Copper has sponsored Rs 3.1 lakh to Patient Welfare Society of Thoothukudi Government Medical College Hospital to procure medical equipment for the intensive care unit of the Sterlite paediatric ward located inside the hospital.

A part of the amount will be allotted for the housekeeping activities in the ward which was built by Sterlite in the year 2009.

Mr.Sameer Gupta, General Manager – Operations, Sterlite Copper presented the cheque for      Rs 3,10,000 to Mr.Ashish Kumar IAS, District Collector, Thoothukudi here on Monday. This will help the hospital administration to provide more intensive medical care for the children in the block. 

Sterlite has been carrying out various health initiatives including project clean hand, medical and blood donation camps, running of 6 rural health clinics and construction of individual household toilets in the villages.

Sterlite Copper initiates total sanitation project at Milavittan

Thoothukudi : Sterlite Copper has initiated total sanitation project at a cost of Rs 75 lakh at Milavittan village in the district. Bhoomi pooja marking the commencement of the construction of the individual household toilets at Milavittan was held in the presence of Mr.P.Ramnath, Chief Executive Officer, Sterlite Copper.

Under the total sanitation project, individual household toilets will be constructed to the villagers who are in need of the same. The cost of each toilet will be Rs 35000 and Sterlite has earmarked Rs 75 lakh for this project. According to a UNICEF survey, 58% of the world’s population practicing open defecation lives in India.

The project will be implemented by Sulabh International, a reputed NGO which had undertaken a lot of sanitation activities across the country.

More than 250 families in the village will be benefitted through this project. The project has been taken up by Sterlite as part of its Model Village Project to make Milavittan as a role model to other villages in the district.

As part of the company’s total sanitation programme, Sterlite has constructed around 150 household toilets in various villages in the district.

In addition to this the company has provided household drinking water tap connection to all the families in Milavittan village at a cost of Rs 10 lakh. The company is also constructing an underground water storage sump with 1,50,000 litre capacity at a cost of Rs 6.5 lakh under Namakku Naame Thittam to meet the drinking water need of the villagers.

Sterlite Copper Commissions Railway Siding at Tuticorin

Thoothukudi : Sterlite Copper has commissioned its first phase of the railway siding project adjacent to the copper smelter plant at Milavittan in Tuticorin. The total investment for the first phase of railway siding project is Rs 25 crore.
The first phase consisting of 7 km track length of railway link project, connecting Sterlite’s smelter unit with the main line became operational on Friday after A.K.Goel, Divisional Railway Manager, Madurai Division flagged off the first rake from the company site.
The railway siding is expected to streamline the  traffic within and outside Sterlite Copper plant premises and  also aims to reduce the company’s cost by increasing efficiency.
The first phase of the project will help the company to transport all its finished & by products   like copper, gypsum and slag to various parts of the country. This will also help the company to minimise the loss of goods during transit.
The second phase of the project is expected to be commissioned by October 2012. It will be equipped with track hopper system, an improvement over the conventional wagon tippler system, to reduce the time interval between loading and unloading.
Completion of the project will also help Sterlite to import raw materials through railway link for its smelter and power plant operations. Sterlite’s 160 MW (2*80 MW) coal based power plant is expected to be commissioned by March 2012.
The company plans to maximise the inward and outward movement through the railway link.
