Sterlite observes Road Safety Week

Thoothukudi: Sterlite Copper organised a general medical camp and an eye camp for truck drivers as part of 25st Road Safety Week celebration here on Saturday.

Sterlite Copper in association with Regional Transport Office, Tuticorin observed Road Safety Week by organising general medical camp and an eye camp for the truck drivers at the truck parking yard near Sterlite Copper in Milavittan.  To improve the road safety awareness of the drivers, several competitions including ‘on-the-spot’ quiz were conducted.  The winners of the competitions were felicitated at the meeting.   More than 200 drivers benefited through the medical and eye camps also. Free spectacles and medicines were also distributed during the camps.

Mr.D.Dhanavel, Head – Commercial, Sterlite Copper welcomed the gathering and reiterated the importance of road safety.  Mr.B.Narayanan, Deputy Superintendent of Police - Rural and Mr.P. Krishnan, Inspector SIPCOT Station also participated in the function which was presided over by Mr.Thangavel, Regional Transport Officer, Thoothukudi.

Speaking at the function, Mr.Thangavel insisted that drivers should be educated on the need to follow traffic rules strictly and road discipline in order to ensure their own safety and the safety of other road users.

Mr.B.Narayanan appealed to the truck drivers to strictly adhere to the road safety norms.

Dr.R.Kailasam, Chief Medical Officer, Sterlite Copper and Mr.Lionel Raj, Chief Doctor, Agarwal Eye Hospital also addressed the gathering regarding the health and hygiene aspects.

In his valedictory address, Mr.P.P.Markhs, Head - Logistics, Sterlite Copper, reiterated the various safety related measures taken by Sterlite Copper and thanked the Chief guest and the Police officials for their presence.

Sterlite Copper distributes free educational kits to girl students

Thoothukudi: Sterlite Copper distributed free educational kits to 6132 girl children in a function organised at TNDTA Primary School, Puthiyamputhur here on Wednesday.

On behalf of Sterlite Copper, Mr.Vinod Wagh, and General Manager – Engineering Services distributed the educational kits to girl students of the school.

Sterlite launched the Ilam Mottukal Project in July 2012 to improve the quality of lives of the community around them. For this project, Sterlite Copper supports the education of 6132 girl children from 77 Government schools in Tuticorin this year.

“Realising that girls are marginalised in the society, we felt the need to provide girl children with a good and healthy childhood. Through this project, we seek to provide girls with the opportunity to study and grow to achieve independence in thought and action. Our project ‘Ilam Mottukal’ will help in the holistic development of these girls,” said Mr.Vinod Wagh, General Manager – Engineering Services.

Additional academic support, material support, social and moral support are the key components in the programme. Academic special classes are being conducted for 1.5 hours beyond school time which will help to bridge the learning gaps and enable children to reach their grade specific competency level in school. The classes are conducted by 183 trained tutors selected within the community with the vision that they would be the local resource to act as friends and mentors to the children.

As the first phase of the project this year, education kit comprising school bag, undergarments, shoes, socks, stationery, notebooks, umbrella, etc was handed over to 6132 girl children. Sterlite has allotted Rs 1.6 crore for this initiative.

Sterlite organises Science Mela for girl children



Thoothukudi: As part of Sterlite Ilam Mottukal Project, Sterlite Copper organised a science mela for girl children of 75 government schools at TNDTA Primary School, Puthiyamputhur here on Thursday.

In the inter-school science competition, nearly 150 children of class one to six from 75 government schools from Thoothukudi participated and exhibited their scientific experiments.  The programme was organized with an objective to make children understand difficult science concepts in an easy and interactive manner. More than 2500 girl students witnessed and benefited by the event.

The competition was based on four themes - scientific reason behind day today life, current issues with scientific solutions, new concepts/inventions and basic concepts with an experiment. The winners will be selected based on innovation, experiment related to the topic, demonstration, explanation, neatness and originality, material used for the experiment and conclusion. First, Second and Third place winners were given Rs 4000, Rs 3000 and Rs 2000 respectively which will help to procure more books to place in the libraries of the schools.
The event was conducted as a part of Sterlite Ilam Mottukal Project launched by Sterlite in July 2012 with an objective to ensure that every girl child is provided with quality school education to realise their fullest potential. For the project, Sterlite Copper has allotted Rs 1.6 crore and will support the education of 6132 girl children from 75 Government schools in Tuticorin. Additional academic, material and moral support for the children are the key components of the programme.

Mr S. Natarajan, Deputy Chairman, V O Chidambaranar Port Trust participated as the chief guest and inaugurated the programme. Mr.P.Ramnath, Chief Executive Officer, Sterlite Copper said that the main objective of the programme is to provide opportunity for the students to understand the science behind various day-to-day concepts and develop a scientific attitude towards their life.

Sterlite Copper initiates total sanitation project At Therku Veerapandiapuram


Thoothukudi: Sterlite Copper has initiated total sanitation project at a cost of Rs 50 lakh at Therku Veerapandiapuram village in the district. Bhoomi pooja marking the commencement of the construction of the individual household toilets at South Veerapandiapuram was held in the presence of Mr.P.Divakaran, General Manager – Operations, Sterlite Copper and Mr. Mr.Subbiah, Panchayat President, Therku Veerapandiapuram.

Under the total sanitation project, individual household toilets will be constructed to the villagers who are in need of the same. The cost of each toilet will be Rs 40000 and Sterlite has earmarked Rs 50 lakh for this project. According to a UNICEF survey, 58% of the world’s population practicing open defecation lives in India.

The project will be implemented by Sulabh International, a reputed NGO which had undertaken a lot of sanitation activities across the country.

More than 500 people in the village will be benefitted through this project. The project has been taken up by Sterlite as part of its Model Village Project to make Therku Veerapandiapuram as a role model to other villages in the district.

As part of the company’s total sanitation programme, Sterlite has constructed more than 300 household toilets in various villages in the district.

In addition to this the company is providing drinking water to all the families in Therku veerapandiapuram village at a cost of Rs 10 lakh. Sterlite Copper distributes uniforms and chairs to children of anganwadi centres



Tuticorin: Sterlite Copper distributed uniforms and chairs to children of Madathur anganwadi centres here on Saturday.

In a function organised at the centre, Mr.Vinod Wagh, General Manager, Engineering Services, Sterlite Copper handed over the uniforms to Ms.Jasmine and Ms.Jansi, Tutors of the centres. Sterlite decided to give the uniforms to the children on the request of the tutors in order to encourage their enrolment and retention. Sterlite had already supported the centre by carrying out several infrastructure development works. 

Sterlite has been doing various child care projects in Tuticorin lile child friendly villages project, project clean hand to bring behavioural changes in hand washing habits among children, providing water facilities and infrastructure support to schools to improve their quality of lives in the community.

Mrs.Muthulakshmi, Assistant Project Officer, Mrs.Lalitha, Supervisor, Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), Mr.R.Rajasekarapandy, Manager and Ms.Suganthi Chelladurai, Associate Manager, Community Relations were also present during the programme.

Sterlite Copper gets commendation for strong commitment towards HR excellence



Tuticorin: Sterlite Copper has received the commendation of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for its strong commitment towards HR excellence. The award was presented to Sterlite Copper in the 4th CII National HR Excellence Award 2013 programme held at New Delhi recently.

On behalf of Sterlite Copper, Mr.Suresh Bose, Head – Human Resources received the award from Mr.Anil Sachdev, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, The School of Inspired Leadership, Mr.H.M.Nerurkar, Managing Director, Tata Steel and Mr.Ashank Desai, Co-founder, Mastek Limited in the presence of Mr.Jitin Prasada, Minister of State, and Human Resource Development.

Exuberant exhibition of leadership by the Senior Management, concentrated focus on improvement in policies and procedures in turn enhancing the career experience at Sterlite, constant engagement with employees at timely intervals and continual improvement in HR processes and practices scaling up to the market requirements are some of the key contributing factors to the success of Sterlite Copper in this award process.

CII has been recognizing organizations in certain key fields and it had institutionalized the National HR Excellence Awards in the year 2009-10. As per the CII HR Excellence Model, the assessment involved sharing of data in the form of the application document and site audit.
