Sterlite Copper initiates total sanitation project At Therku Veerapandiapuram


Thoothukudi: Sterlite Copper has initiated total sanitation project at a cost of Rs 50 lakh at Therku Veerapandiapuram village in the district. Bhoomi pooja marking the commencement of the construction of the individual household toilets at South Veerapandiapuram was held in the presence of Mr.P.Divakaran, General Manager – Operations, Sterlite Copper and Mr. Mr.Subbiah, Panchayat President, Therku Veerapandiapuram.

Under the total sanitation project, individual household toilets will be constructed to the villagers who are in need of the same. The cost of each toilet will be Rs 40000 and Sterlite has earmarked Rs 50 lakh for this project. According to a UNICEF survey, 58% of the world’s population practicing open defecation lives in India.

The project will be implemented by Sulabh International, a reputed NGO which had undertaken a lot of sanitation activities across the country.

More than 500 people in the village will be benefitted through this project. The project has been taken up by Sterlite as part of its Model Village Project to make Therku Veerapandiapuram as a role model to other villages in the district.

As part of the company’s total sanitation programme, Sterlite has constructed more than 300 household toilets in various villages in the district.

In addition to this the company is providing drinking water to all the families in Therku veerapandiapuram village at a cost of Rs 10 lakh. Mr.R.Ramesh, General Manager – Community Relations, R.Rajasekarapandy, Manager, Community Relations, Sterlite Copper, NGO partners, and villagers were present during the event.
