Thoothukudi:The maiden voyage of MSV. Esther Rajathi,
the mechanised
sailing vessel carrying copper anodes of Sterlite Copper was flagged off by
Mr.S.Natarajan, Deputy Chairman, V.O.ChidambaranarPort Trust in the presence of Mr.P.Ramnath,
Chief Executive Officer, Sterlite Copper here on Saturday.
This is the first time copper anodes are being
transported via mechanised sailing vessel in the country. The vesselstarting
its journey towards Mumbai carrying 350tons of copper anodes from Thoothukudi
Old harbour (Zone B) will reach the destination on 12th October
2012. The copper anodes are being sent to Sterlite’s refinery plant at Silvassa
in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli where they get refinedinto
copper cathodes.
“This is the first time in the history of Sterlite,
copper anodes are being transported by this mode. It is now an alternate mode
of transport for us other than trucks. I am sure that this will be benefiting
the sagging mechanised sailing vessel trade,” said Mr.P.Ramnath.
“We thank Sterlite Copper for
supporting us in promoting our century old, traditional sea trade,” said
Mr.S.Princeton Fernando, President, Coastal Mechanised Sail Vessel Owners’
Association (CMSVOA). He also commended Sterlite for taking efforts for
improving the quality of lives of women from poor fishermen community through
its community welfare programmes.
Mr.P.P.Markhs, Head – Logistics,
employees of Sterlite Copper, port officials and office bearers of CMSVOA were
also present during the event.
