Sterlite initiates cleaning of east main irrigation channel

Tuticorin : Sterlite Industries (I) Ltd (SIIL) in association with Tamiraparani Project Committee has extended support for the cleaning of Tamiraparani Maruthur east main irrigation channel. The inauguration of the project was held at Vallanadu here on Saturday.

Tamiraparani Maruthur east main irrigation channel starts at Srivaikundam dam and runs upto Kadaimadai covering total distance of 16 kms. At present, the water flow in the channel is slowed down due to excess weed growth and as a result, the farmers at the tail end are not able to get the required quantity of water for irrigation. In this situation, Mr.D.Udhayasuriyan, Chairman of Tamiraparani Project Committee submitted a memorandum to Sterlite requesting the company to sponsor the cleaning and desilting work in the east main irrigation channel. The company immediately accepted the farmers request and allotted Rs 4 lakh for the project.

By undertaking this work there will be free flow of water in the east main channel which will benefit 12000 farmers covering 7800 acres of agricultural land.

Sterlite had also supported the farmers by giving free seeds and saplings, and also introducing organic farming techniques to increase productivity. In the last ten days, SIIL has spent Rs 9 lakh for cleaning of irrigation channels in Tuticorin district.

Cut Line: Cleaning of east main irrigation channel was started at Vallanadu with the support of Sterlite Industries on Saturday.
