Sterlite supports ‘Little Sisters of Poor’

Tuticorin : Sterlite Industries (I) Ltd (SIIL) has contributed Rs 10 lakh for the construction of  ‘Little Sisters of the Poor’, an old age home in Tuticorin on Wednesday. On behalf of Sterlite, Mr.Prasad Surya Rao, Vice President, Operations and Mr.S.R.Srinivasan, Vice President, Projects, Sterlite handed over a cheque for Rs 10 lakh to Sister Mary Jacintha, Superior of the old age home.

The management of the old age home decided to demolish the old building and construct a new one since they were not able to accommodate its 110 residents. The new building will have the capacity to accommodate all the residents and the construction is proposed to get over by August 2011.

People are accommodated in the home irrespective of caste, creed and religion, based on their economic status and age should be more than 65 years. The company decided to fund the construction of the home as the money will help to shelter the needy people. The old age home is completely dependent upon public charity for its day to day running.

Below are the infrastructure development initiatives by Sterlite in partnership with district administration in Tuticorin :

  • Construction of a Paediatric block at a cost of Rs 80 lakh
  • Swajaldhara drinking water project at Milavittan, Mapillaiyurani, Tuticorin rural and Sankraperi)
  • Construction of overhead tanks at South Veerapandiyapuram and Udangudi
  • Construction of water sump at Vadakkusilukkanpatti and Milavittan
  • Construction of bus shelters at Pudukkottai and Tuticorin Port
  • Construction of sewage canal at Nainarpuram
  • Construction of class room at RC School at Xaveriarpuram
  • Renovation of School building, anganwadi building and toilet complex at Vadakkusilukkanpatti

Recently, Sterlite has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the district administration to sponsor Rs 78 lakh towards the construction of 3.5 km road from Third Gate roundel to Threspuram via American Hospital and Karuppatti Society. The company has also signed MoU with the district administration to sponsor Rs 52 lakh towards the upgradation of Primary Health Centre (PHC) at Mappillaiyurani.

Mr.Sridhar Narasimhan, Associate Vice President, Finance, Mr.Suresh Bose, General Manager, Human Resources, Mr.R.Rajasekarapandy, Head – Corporate Social Responsibility, Sterlite, Sterlite self help group members, NGOs and sisters of the home were also present during the event.
